Let’s take a look at the first concern cited. While it may not be what you need to hear, the simple truth is, ADHD can definitely allow you to lose out on a few opportunities. As an example, lots of people with this particular ailment find it quite challenging to stay with the same employer. They get frustrated, mostly due to boredom. This is especially true if they are engaged in some sort of repetitive work. ADHD patients don’t often do well on production lines.
Their hyperactivity and impulsivity might cause them to show unfavorable behavior at work, and as is to be expected, this can potentially put them in the bad books with management. Their inattentiveness also does them no favors, so they typically get a reputation of being forgetful and/or undependable.
Having said all of that, there are countless ADHD patients in high flying jobs. Some take pharmaceutical drugs, whilst others have just learned how to use the condition to their own advantage. One example of a famous person who by all accounts was exceptionally successful is Albert Einstein.
Okay, now let’s discuss the second concern? Can a manager turn you down given that you have ADHD? Regrettably I am not 100% sure what your employment rights are, so I can’t say for sure.
I do nonetheless know that a handful of employers will refuse to employ you if you have been on ADHD prescription drugs for a certain period of time. The United States military is actually one such employer.
Whether or not this is justified or not is open to debate, but in my view, it is to a certain degree, entirely understandable. After all, in the United States, ADHD tablets are classed as a Category II Controlled Substance, thus putting them in the same class as cocaine, morphine and so on.
Does ADHD impact on employment possibilities? I imagine a great deal will depend on how much you tell a likely employer. If your condition is controlled, then why even mention it. On the other hand, if you are consuming prescribed drugs for it, then perhaps it is advisable to be honest.
